About Voltara Systems

Built inside a solar company. Sold as software.

Voltara did not start as a software company. It started as the operating problem of a licensed Egyptian solar EPC — and as the software that fixed it. This page is the story, and the standard we hold the product to.

§01 · THE PROBLEM

The re-keying was ours first

I run a licensed solar EPC in Egypt. Before Voltara was a product, my own pipeline lived in four places: a CRM that held the lead, an engineering model that held the design, a document that held the proposal, and a plan that held the project. Every handoff between them was re-keying — and every re-key was a chance for the number the client signed to drift from the number the engineer calculated.

We lost hours to it every week, and the hours were the cheap part. The expensive part was the doubt: when sales, engineering and finance each hold their own copy of a project, nobody is sure which copy is true. The fix was never a better spreadsheet. It was one thread — a number entered once at the first call and carried, untouched by hand, to the commissioned plant.

§02 · THE WORKBOOK

An engineering workbook became the studio

The engineering core predates the company. It began as a Cairo engineering workbook — the loss model, the hourly maths, the financial engine — used on 2.5+ GW of Benban-financed projects. That workbook became the Voltara studio: PVGIS 8,760-hour weather, a full hourly shading matrix, bypass-diode mismatch, a 25-year NPV/IRR model and a 10-section feasibility PDF that follows the IEC 61724-1 methodology with P50/P90 yield and documented uncertainty.

The discipline came with it. Every studio release is regression-gated to ±0.5% of that validated baseline — if a change moves the numbers more than half a percent against the workbook that stood behind real financed projects, it does not ship.

Where the workbook lives now: the design studio.

§03 · THE DASHBOARD

Built to run the company that built it

The dashboard exists because the EPC company needed running. Pipeline, projects, procurement, quality gates, finance with Egyptian VAT and withholding, payroll under Egyptian labour rules — built module by module to operate a real contracting business in a real jurisdiction, not to demo well.

It still earns its keep the same way. The EPC arm runs on the platform daily — it quotes on it, bills on it, pays suppliers and crew on it. We are customer zero: when an invoice template is wrong or a quality gate sits in the wrong place, we feel it on our own projects before any customer does.

What customer zero looks like in practice: our EPC services arm.

§04 · THE DECISION

SaaS first, with the EPC as proving ground

At some point the software stopped being a side effect and became the point. We chose SaaS-first: two products — the design studio and the operations dashboard — joined by one thread, the wedge, where a CRM lead becomes a two-second watermarked estimate, opens auto-seeded in the studio, and returns to the lead as a bankable proposal with the SLD and costed BOM attached.

We build for mid-market MENA EPCs of roughly 10–150 staff — companies large enough to feel the seams between sales, engineering and delivery, and small enough that nobody has time to babysit four disconnected systems. The EPC arm continues in Egypt as the proving ground: every feature is used in anger on real projects before it is sold.

The thread itself, step by step: how it works.

§06 · WHAT WE ARE / ARE NOT

A software company, not an energy company.

Voltara Systems is an independent software business based in Cairo, Egypt. We make solar-EPC software — we do not develop, finance, own or operate power plants, and we are not affiliated with any energy utility, developer or company of a similar name. Our product is the platform; our customers are the EPCs who use it.

And in the interest of plain disclosure: the founder also operates a licensed solar-EPC services arm in Egypt — an NREA-licensed contracting business, [[PENDING: EPC services-arm legal entity name and registration]], that designs and builds solar projects for its own clients and runs on this platform daily. Software customers contract with Voltara Systems, the software company; the services arm is a separate business.
